What do Nonprofits Really Do? Here’s How We’re Creating Change That Lasts

When most people hear the word nonprofit, a few questions naturally come to mind:

Where does the money go? Who actually benefits? And how can I make a real difference?

At Community Action Services and Food Bank, we get it — people want transparency, impact, and results. That’s why everything we do is focused on building long-term solutions for families in Utah, Wasatch, and Summit counties.

So, what do nonprofits really do?

We meet immediate needs — and we invest in futures.

  1. We Feed Families and Empower Local Growers

Food Pantries: No one should have to choose between paying bills and buying groceries. Our five food pantries serve thousands of individuals and families each year, thanks to partnerships with over 100 food network allies.

Community Gardens: We don’t just give food — we teach people how to grow it. In 2024, 134 families harvested more than 8,700 pounds of produce in our four community gardens. It’s fresh food, grown by the community for the community.

  1. We Teach Tools for Lifelong Financial Freedom

Learning Center: From budgeting and building credit to eliminating debt, our free financial literacy classes give individuals the confidence to take control of their money.

Homebuyer Education: Buying a home is one of life’s biggest milestones. We help first-time buyers understand the process, ask the right questions, and make empowered decisions.

  1. We Break the Cycle of Poverty with Human Connection

Circles Initiative (in Utah and Heber Valley): Poverty isn’t just about income — it’s about isolation. Through Circles, we pair families working to rise out of poverty with community allies who offer mentorship, encouragement, and real-world resources. It’s a two-way relationship built on trust and transformation.

Youth Leadership Development: For young people aged 12–18, we provide goal-setting tools, mentorship, and leadership training to help them envision a different future — and build the steps to get there. The result? More confidence, more direction, and stronger future communities.

So…What do Nonprofits Really Do?

We listen.

We respond.

We invest.

We build better communities — not just for today, but for generations to come.

At CASFB, our work isn’t just about handing out food or teaching a class. It’s about restoring dignity, creating opportunities, and walking alongside individuals as they create a future full of hope and stability.
