Poverty
Poverty in our Area
Statistics show that poverty touches a large number of Americans over their lifetimes. Sometimes it is a chronic condition that persists over several lifetimes. Most often, poverty comes as a consequence of life’s unremarkable tragedies- low paying job, illness, job loss, divorce, or disability. This can destroy a family’s ability to support itself. Regardless of the cause, most families struggle against their situation. Many find their way out of poverty. There are more than 69,500 people living in poverty in Utah, Wasatch and Summit Counties
Homelessness
Homelessness is a symptom. Individuals or families may become homeless because of the loss of a job, illness, disability or other serious circumstance. Many individuals suffer from a mental illness. Solutions to homelessness include better paying jobs, training and education, availability of affordable housing, and health care.
Hunger
Hunger affects one out of every four children in Utah. Families struggle because the food budget must often be used to fix the car, pay a higher heating bill, to pay for a medical prescription or other basic family needs. Find out more here.
