  1. What does Community Action Services and Food Bank do?

    Community Action Services and Food Bank is dedicated to fostering self-reliance in individuals, families and communities, and we do this by providing a variety of programs and solutions designed to address local needs and issues.

    • Family Development Program
      We empower families to become self-reliant by providing short-term assistance to resolve their immediate crisis followed by continued support to assist them in attaining financial stability and self-reliance.
    • Home Buyer and Mortgage Counseling Program
      We empower families to obtain long-term home ownership through education and counseling. We strengthen communities by identifying resources, advocating ethical practices and assisting with dispute resolutions.
    • Youth Program
      We empower youth from low-income families to resist negative peer pressure and become contributing members of the community by providing mentor support and essential skills training.
    • HEAT Program
      We provide eligible households with an annual utility payment to ease the burden of high-energy costs while promoting energy conservation.
    • Community Services Program
      We improve the quality of life for elderly and disabled individuals by connecting them to programs and resources through home and community visits.
    • Food Pantry Program
      We alleviate hunger by providing eligible families with food boxes, counseling, budgeting and referrals.
    • Food Bank
      We also assist the community to alleviate hunger by collecting and distributing donated food and hygiene items to local pantries, community agencies, churches and senior centers.
    • Building Community Solutions and Advocacy
      We work with other community organizations to develop community solutions to the problems faced by our low and moderate-income residents.
  2. How can I, my family, or group volunteer?

    Community Action Services and Food Bank works with volunteers in many different ways to improve lives and communities. We have opportunities for individual or group one-time projects, internships, Eagle Scout projects, mentoring, and professional volunteers.

  3. How can I help otherwise?

    • Host a donation drive in your neighborhood, school, civic group or club, church, etc. Learn more here:

    • Subscribe to our "Urgent Needs Mailing List" and we will notify you of urgent needs at the food bank and other agency programs. For instance - we may alert you of the need for turkeys for the holiday season.
    • Make a tax-deductible donation. 96.4 cents of every dollar donated is returned to the community in the form of services. For every $5 donated to the food bank we are able to generate $130 worth of food for families in need.
    • Educate family and friends. Learn about poverty and hunger in our area by clicking here.

  5. I want to buy my first home. Where do I start?

    We have first time homebuyer classes that are free. The class teaches all aspects of how to buy a home. If you want a Housing Counselor will work with your family to prepare financially to buy your home.

  6. How do I apply for help?

    Each Community Action Services Program has different eligibility criteria. Many programs require that you call ahead to make an appointment so that we can best help you. Call 373-8200 ext. 246 or 249. For your convenience please do not bring children when you come in to apply for help. Learn more here.

  7. What is a being a Registered Member mean?

    Those who are Registered Members of Community Action Services and Food Bank have special responsibilities in specific agency program areas. The Registered Members may login with their password. If you do not have a password, you are not allowed in this area of the site.
